Lowe stymies former mates as Braves edge Dodgers

Baseball Betting Lines

08/01/2009 - Atlanta, GA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Derek Lowe defeated his former club, the Dodgers, in his first appearance against them after signing with Atlanta in the offseason, and Chipper Jones knocked in a pair of runs, as the Braves edged Los Angeles, 4-3, in the second of three games at Turner Field.

Lowe (11-7) worked six innings and surrendered five hits and three runs with a pair of walks and as many strikeouts for the Braves. He has allowed three or less runs in winning each of his last four decisions, spanning five starts.

The veteran righty won 54 games and was an integral part of a pair of playoff teams during a four-year tenure in LA that ended last season, when the 36- year-old signed a four-year, $60-million contract with the Braves.

Atlanta's bullpen went the rest of the way, allowing only one baserunner, with Rafael Soriano picking up his 16th save of the year.

Adam LaRoche had a successful homecoming, finishing 2-for-3 with a walk and run scored. LaRoche played for the Braves for the first three seasons of his career (2004-06) before being traded to Pittsburgh and subsequently Boston. He was acquired Friday from Boston in exchange for fellow first baseman Casey Kotchman.

Nate McLouth had two hits and scored twice in the win for Atlanta, which had lost four of six.

Andre Ethier hit his 22nd home run on the year and ended 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while James Loney collected a pair of hits and an RBI for LA, which had won back-to-back games following a season-high four-game slide.

Randy Wolf (5-6) was touched for nine hits and four runs over six full frames for the Dodgers. The veteran lefty fanned seven and walked two. He had recorded six straight quality outings, dating back to June 24, prior to Saturday's loss.

With the Dodgers up by one in the sixth, Atlanta assumed a 4-3 lead with a pair of two-out RBI singles from Diory Hernandez and pinch-hitter Greg Norton, respectively. LaRoche singled and moved up on a throwing error by catcher Russell Martin before Hernandez punched a single into right field. Norton then stepped in to pinch-hit for Lowe and singled to left, chasing home Hernandez.

Peter Moylan, Eric O'Flaherty, Mike Gonzalez and Soriano did the work in relief of Lowe from there, with only Orlando Hudson reaching on a one-out double in the seventh. O'Flaherty came on for Moylan and got pinch-hitter Juan Pierre to hit into a double play to end the threat.

McLouth set the table for Atlanta's first run, sending a base hit into right field and swiping second before scoring on Jones' two-out double in the third.

LA came back with two in the fourth for a 2-1 edge. Rafael Furcal led off with a walk, Ethier had a single and Manny Ramirez walked to load the bases. Casey Blake hit a sac fly for the first run, and Loney followed with a run-scoring single that deflected off Lowe. Matt Kemp fanned with runners at the corners, and Martin lined out to end the frame.

Singles by McLouth and Martin Prado left runners at first and third with one down in the fifth, and Jones' single plated McLouth to tie the game.

Ethier gave LA a 3-2 edge with a leadoff blast to center field in the sixth.

Super Bowl XLIV Odds

Super Bowl XLIII isn't even a week old yet and oddsmakers have already released Super Bowl XLIV odds.

Despite the Pittsburgh Steelers winning Super Bowl 43, the New England Patriots are 8/1 favorites to win Super Bowl 44.

Bet Super Bowl XLIV Future Odds

With their 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII, the Steelers became the latest NFL champion. But believe it or not, oddsmakers from online sports book MySportsbook.com don't have the Steelers the favorites to win Super Bowl XLIV next season.

That honor belongs to the New England Patriots, who are 8/1 favorites to win despite not even qualify for the postseason in 2008. The Pats also have a major decision to make regarding what to do with Matt Cassel, who played well in Tom Brady's (knee surgery) absence last year but is also a free agent this offseason.

Ironically, the Steelers aren't even oddsmakers second choice to win Super Bowl 44, as the Dallas Cowboys are listed right behind the Patriots at 9/1 despite not making the playoffs themselves. Clearly oddsmakers think the public will hop back on the Cowboys' bandwagon considering the immense talent they have and the opening of a brand new stadium.

After Dallas, then comes Pittsburgh at 10/1, but they share those odds with the New York Giants, who won Super Bowl XLII. The Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers round out the top six teams at 12/1, while the Baltimore Ravens (14/1), Tennessee Titans (16/1), Carolina Panthers (18/1) and Philadelphia Eagles (18/1) complete the top 10.

The NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals got no love from oddsmakers as they were established as a 30/1 long shot to win next year's Super Bowl. They share those same odds with the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers – two teams that didn't even qualify for the postseason. Other long shots are the Kansas City Chiefs (100/1), Detroit Lions (100/1), St. Louis Rams (75/1) and Oakland Raiders (75/1).
