Cards resume road trip in nation's capital

04/30/2009 -
(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The St. Louis Cardinals will resume their seven-game road
trip tonight with the first of four straight games against the Washington Nationals in the nation's capital.
St. Louis won two out of three games against the Atlanta Braves and recorded a
5-3 victory in Wednesday's series finale. Starter Adam Wainwright improved to
3-0 this season and gave up three-runs --two earned -- on seven hits, while
striking out two batters and walking five. Ryan Franklin earned his seventh
save of the season after retiring the final four batters.
Slugger Albert Pujols had two hits an RBI and a run scored to help the
Cardinals to their seventh win in nine tries. Skip Schumaker, Chris Duncan and
Rick Ankiel each added an RBI in a winning cause. In injury news for St.
Louis, Brendan Ryan had a double and run scored before leaving with a left
hamstring injury in the fifth inning.
Cardinals young right-hander Mitchell Boggs gets the nod Thursday and is 1-0
with a 1.17 ERA in two games (one start) this season. Boggs made his 2009
debut on April 17 at Chicago and gave up one run in two relief innings of his
team's 8-7 loss.
Boggs then started against the same Cubs club on April 25, earning the win
with 5 2/3 solid innings of work. He gave up one unearned run and six hits in
an 8-2 victory over the division rivals. Boggs will now make his first
appearance against Washington.
The Nationals are fresh off last night's 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in the finale of a three-game series. They ended a two-game slide and
completed a six-game road trip with a 2-4 mark, as Anderson Hernandez led the
way with three hits and a pair of RBI in a winning effort.
Ryan Zimmerman achieved a career-high with a hit in 18 straight games, ending
with a double, walk, run scored and RBI for the Nats, who got two hits, an RBI
and a run scored out of Elijah Dukes.
Scott Olsen lasted 5 2/3 innings to collect the win, yielding just six hits
and one run to pick up his first victory this season. Julian Tavarez came on
in the ninth for his first save of 2009.
The Nats will open a six-game homestand tonight with the Cardinals and Astros,
who will visit Nationals Park for a quick two-game set.
Washington will hand the ball to Daniel Cabrera tonight and he has struggled
to an 0-2 mark and 4.42 earned run average in four starts this season. Cabrera
lost his most recent outing on April 25 against the New York Mets on the road,
allowing five runs -- one earned -- over 2 1/3 innings of an 8-2 setback.
Cabrera, who has a pair of no-decisions sandwiched between losses, will make
his first appearance against St. Louis. Washington has lost every game the
righty has pitched this season.
St. Louis won five of six meetings with Washington last season.

Super Bowl 2009 Betting propositions
Underdog bettors love the Super Bowl and, history suggests, the underdogs love them back. And the big dogs bite harder.
Even so, there is a warning in store for Super Bowl gamblers who must love dogs: The Arizona Cardinals Super Bowl betting lines might not be enough of a Cinderella to make it worth your while.
Although the Cardinals were widely panned as one of the worst division winners and least playoff-worthy teams in recent memory, their trip to Super Bowl XLIII Jan. 31 in Tampa against the Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl betting lines comes with a little more respect from the oddsmakers than you might imagine. They are a 7-point underdog at most sports books.
If you count yourself among those who covet the big dog in the big game, this isn’t exactly great news. You should have been hoping for more points. This is because the facts show that the bigger the dog, the better the bet in the Super Bowl.
Case in point: Over the past 13 seasons, double-figure underdogs in the Super Bowl are 4-0-1 ATS and have won the past three outright. In fact, the last double-digit chalk to do the deed for bettors was the 1995 San Francisco 49ers, who managed to beat the astounding 19-point spot afforded backers of the San Diego Chargers in the 49-26 romp in Super Bowl XXIX.
By contrast, 7-point favorites are 2-1-1 ATS in the same span, the last such contest resulting a cover grinded out by the Colts in their 29-17 win over the Bears two seasons ago in Super Bowl XLI.
In 2004, the Patriots failed to cover the number in their 32-29 triumph over the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl props while the Rams and Titans gave everyone a refund in 2000 after the Rams posted a 23-16 win as a seven-point favorite.
So while Arizona’s run has included impressive upsets as a 10-point road underdog to the Carolina Panthers and Sunday’s 32-25 win in the NFC championship game to the 4-point favored Philadelphia Eagles, their long-shot story lacks a bit of the David vs. Goliath storyline of past Super Bowl underdogs.
While the seven-point spread represents a significant gap in the perception of strength between the two teams, it is far from monumental. For example, last season the Giants were the wild-card afterthought turned road-warrior buzzsaw, with stunning wins over the Buccaneers, Cowboys and Packers to earn their place in the Super Bowl.
There, they played spoiler to New England’s bid to become the first 19-0 team in NFL history and cemented their place in sports betting lore with a 17-14 win as a 12.5-point underdog.
In other words, the Cardinals appear to have their work cut out for them as a mid-range underdog. But in homage to the spread beaters who have come before them, here is a brief look back at recent colossal upsets in the Super Bowl:
SB XLII -- 2008 -- New York Giants 17, New England Patriots 14 (Giants +12.5) – Eli Manning’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress in the final minute clinched the historic upset for the Giants, who used a masterful defensive plan to slow down Tom Brady and the previously undefeated New England Patriots.
XXXVI -- 2002 -- Patriots 20, Rams 17 (Patriots +14) – This was the coming out party for the aforementioned Brady, who went from obscure sixth-round draft pick to Super Bowl hero in one fell swoop. He led the game-winning drive in the final minute – eschewing analyst John Madden’s advice to take a knee and play for overtime – leading to Adam Vinatieri’s memorable 48-yard field goal that split the uprights as time expired.
XXXII 1998 Broncos 31, Packers 24 (Denver +12) – The first of John Elway’s two consecutive Super Bowl titles to put an end to his Hall of Fame career was an upset for the ages. The Broncos used the determination of Elway and a 157-yard, three-touchdown performance from Terrell Davis to turn back Brett Favre and the heavily favored Packers.

NFL Football Betting : Odds on NFL Division to Win the Super Bowl
NFL Super Bowl Betting
The AFC South and the NFC East are the favorite divisions to have the next Super Bowl champ among them in the NFL betting odds. But more down to the point, these football odds are in favor of the Indianapolis Colts, by far the strongest team in the AFC South, and the Dallas Cowboys of the NFC East.
Most sports fans would agree that these two teams top the list to win it all before the season even begins. In the BetUS Sportsbook football futures, the Colts are +800 in the odds to win the Super Bowl, while the Cowboys are sitting at +1000 and the Super Bowl XLIV champions New Orleans Saints at +900. In the AFC South, the Colts won the division for five straight years after the 2002 realignment, before the Tennessee Titans won it in 2008. But the Colts came back strong in 2009 to win the division again en route to the Super Bowl. The Cowboys are the favorite to win the NFC East, as well as to advance far into the post season. The Cowboys won the division last season before their horrendous loss in the NFC Divisional playoff to Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings. But the ‘Boys will take that loss humbly and be ready for the playoffs this time around.
The NFC South is also very strong, at +600 in the NFL futures, considering that it is home to the defending Super Bowl champions. However, some predictions have the Atlanta Falcons with possibilities of claiming the divisional title this season in place of the Saints, as no team has won back-to-back division championships since the division realignment took place. Let’s not overlook the AFC North at +500. As TO goes to Cincinnati to join Chad OchoCinco and Adam “Pac-Man” Jones, this team looks to claim the division title again. And it is likely they will do so. The Bengals lost in the AFC Wild Card spot in a hard-fought battle against the New York Jets last season. Lest not forget the Pittsburgh Steelers, the XLII Super Bowl Champions… All these teams present interesting odds and matchups for the upcoming season, but the safest and surest bet seems to be with the Colts in the AFC South and the Cowboys in the NFC East.
