Cards still waiting for the student to become the master
Football Betting Lines
09/25/2007 -
(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - While Matt Leinart is without a doubt the Arizona Cardinals' version of Luke Skywalker, the club is still unsure what role Kurt
Warner occupies.
Is he more like Yoda, a Jedi Master on the elderly side who can't really
battle on the field anymore but can pass on years of wisdom and knowledge? Or
is Warner filling the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi, a man who possessed wisdom but
could still tangle with the Darth Vaders of the world?
Ken Whisenhunt must think that Warner still has some juice in him, as the
Cardinals head coach inserted the 36-year-old into Sunday's 26-23 loss to the
Baltimore Ravens.
Warner entered the game midway through the second quarter and guided the
Cardinals down the field for a field goal and a 6-3 deficit. Leinart returned
on Arizona's next series that ended after four plays, with Baltimore taking
the resulting punt into the end zone, and stayed on the field for the
Cardinals' next possession, which ended on a missed field goal by Neil
Rackers.
The USC product remained the quarterback through the beginning of the third
quarter before again giving way to Warner midway through the frame. This time
Warner stayed in the game from that point on and went on to toss a pair of
touchdown passes.
According to Whisenhunt, Warner getting some snaps during the game was by
design.
"We had a package in this week for Kurt," said Whisenhunt. "He was the one
that got the reps for it. We felt that in our game plan, it was just too much
for Matt to focus on, so we had one section for Kurt in the no-huddle, which
he was good at. We were down three scores and we knew that was the best way to
move the ball quickly."
Leinart went just 9-of-20 for 53 yards and saw his receivers drop several
balls, while Warner finished 15-of-20 for 258 yards and two touchdowns for
Arizona, which fell to 1-2 with the defeat.
Whisenhunt said that he feels experienced quarterbacks can run the no-huddle
better because they usually see looks quicker and don't have to process as
much information in that given situation.
Despite Warner's success, a permanent change doesn't appear to be coming for
Arizona under center, however.
"Matt has been our starter," said Whisenhunt. "I think there is going to be
some growing pains, as there is with any young quarterback. But Matt has been
working hard in improving. You have seen some improvement and he has
responded, and I think in order to be fair to Matt, he is the starting
quarterback."
Whisenhunt added, though, that it would be naive of him not to use Warner in
an area he excels at, meaning the former Super Bowl MVP should again see time
on the field if the situation dictates.
No matter how this shakes down, Leinart should seize the opportunity to
continue to learn from Warner for as long as he can. Arizona's future is
without question his, with Warner just showing him the ways of the force.
COSTLY HIT
Sunday's loss didn't come without controversy. With the score tied at 23-23
and Baltimore storming for a game-winning score with under one minute left,
the Ravens' Kyle Boller hit Todd Heap across the middle for a 12-yard gain
close to midfield.
Heap was brought down in a heap by a vicious blow by Cardinals safety Adrian
Wilson that appeared to be a clean but hard hit. However, Wilson was flagged
for unnecessary roughness because officials felt he led with his forearm. That
added 15 yards to the play and helped set up Matt Stover's game-winning 46-
yard field goal as time expired.
Said Whisenhunt after the game, "I was told on the field that it was his
elbow. He led with the forearm. I really didn't get a good look at it.
Watching the replay, I thought it was a good hit. I thought Adrian got a good
jump on the ball."
JAMES NOT A FACTOR
Despite ripping off his longest run as a Cardinal and passing Ricky Watters
for 16th place on the NFL's all-time career rushing list, running back
Edgerrin James wasn't a factor in the Baltimore game.
"Edge" finished with 57 yards on 10 carries and also had a 10-yard reception.
That included a 27-yard run in the first quarter, his longest as a Cardinal.
However, the no-huddle package Arizona decided to go with late called for more
appearances by backup running backs J.J. Arrington and Marcel Shipp, so James
wasn't on the field as much as usual.
BOLD AND BEAT UP
Anquan Boldin clicked with Warner, hauling in a career-high 14 passes for 181
yards during the game. He also scored twice, including a 32-yard touchdown
that pulled Arizona within three points in the fourth quarter.
Boldin, though, suffered a slight hip injury late in the game and was limping
afterwards. However, he should be ready to go for this weekend.
MORE WOUNDED CARDS
Rookie offensive tackle Levi Brown left in the first half of Sunday's game
with a right ankle sprain and did not return. He is questionable for this
weekend and his absence would be a huge blow to Arizona's front line. Brown
was replaced by Elton Brown, who played for the first time since 2005.
Also, center Al Johnson (knee) and defensive tackle Alan Branch (hand) are
still battling injuries and did not play on Sunday.
NEXT UP: AN OLD FRIEND
One game circled on Whisenhunt's calendar, whether he will admit it or not,
takes place this Sunday, when the 3-0 Pittsburgh Steelers pay a visit to
Arizona.
Whisenhunt, of course, spent his previous six seasons with the Steelers,
including the last three as their offensive coordinator, and was considered
one of the candidates to replace Bill Cowher as Pittsburgh's head coach during
the offseason.
That job instead went to Mike Tomlin, and Whisenhunt bolted to Arizona.
Whisenhunt's reign as the Steelers' offensive coordinator began the same
season Ben Roethlisberger took over under center in 2004. Roethlisberger went
on to win his first 13 career starts, earned NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year
honors, and became the youngest quarterback in NFL history to win a Super Bowl
the following season.
Arizona trails the all-time series with Pittsburgh, 22-32-3, having lost two
straight and five of its last seven games against the Steelers. That includes
a 28-15 setback when the clubs last met in 2003.

Elite 8 NCAA Tournament Betting at online sportsbook MySportsbook.com
In what should be an outstanding Saturday of March Madness betting action, the top four teams in the South and West Regions square off in what should be extremely close match-ups. Three of the four teams are coming off extremely close games on Thursday evening, only UCLA won semi comfortably over Pitt 64-55.
Ohio State is coming off their second game in a row where in all reality they should have lost. Of course that doesn’t matter now since the name of the game is “survive and advance” but as the tournament continues, they can’t afford to keep getting down to their opponents early. Kansas also avoided a scare by holding off a scrappy Southern Illinois squad. In the third thrilling game of the evening Memphis pulled off the minor upset (+3.5) despite being the higher seed to Texas A&M.
Although the spreads are fairly small for Saturday’s games, MySportsbook.com continue to bet against the underdogs. Despite OSU’s two scares, 86% of the “betting public” feels the Buckeyes (-1.5) have what it takes to make the Final Four. In fact, so much of the early money is on OSU that the line has already moved from -1 to -1.5. In the second game of the doubleheader, Kansas and their high-powered offense are 2 point favorites as they take on UCLA and their effective defense. About 63% of the early money thus far is once again backing the favorites. If those percentages stay that high, don’t be surprised if this line moves as well. If you like Kansas (-2) you might want to jump on it early.
Memphis vs. Ohio State
Both squads were involved in thrillers on Thursday evening and should come out fired up. OSU can ill afford to get behind early like they did versus their previous two opponents (Xavier, Tennessee). Greg Oden needs to stay out of foul trouble; the Buckeyes are a completely different team when he is on the court. Memphis definitely has the athleticism and length to match-up with OSU. Of Memphis’ five leading minute earners, the shortest of the bunch is 6’5”. Each team has a very effective defense; Memphis surrenders 62.3 PPG whereas the Buckeyes give up only 61 PPG. With those type of numbers, it isn’t surprising that Memphis covered the UNDER almost 69% of the time this season. As a favorite, OSU has covered the UNDER almost 66% of the time over the last three seasons. The major concern for Memphis which is magnifies this time of the year is their brutal foul shooting (62%). This season, OSU is 17-11 ATS versus teams with a winning record and 7-2 ATS in all tournament games. Memphis has been an extremely reliable cover in tournament play in recent years with a 23-8 ATS record over the last three seasons.
UCLA vs. Kansas
In the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, UCLA will play in a role which they are very unfamiliar with that of the underdog. Only twice this season have they been getting points from the handicappers and both times they covered. Over the last three seasons UCLA is a reliable 23-7 ATS in this unfamiliar role. UCLA has not fared well against Big 12 opponents recently going 1-7 ATS since 1997. Giving up only 59.6 PPG, UCLA will definitely look to do what they do best: keep this game as low scoring as possible. Their defense has been especially tough during the tournament. UCLA opponents have been able to muster up only 48.7 PPG while shooting a combined 34.5% from the field. UCLA definitely has a challenge at hand with a Kansas team that is capable of putting points on the board in bunches. As a team, they average 79 PPG and shoot an impressive 49.6% from the field and 39.4% from beyond the arc. During the tournament Kansas has been “lights out” from the field having shot 56.2%.

MySportsbook.com favors Bears, Bengals, Chargers and Colts to remain perfect
LAS VEGAS , Sept. 28 - Two big match-ups of undefeated teams have fans salivating at the Week Four schedule in the NFL. The Chicago Bears stifling defense looks to provide a less than hospitable welcome to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night in a battle of two 3-0 teams in the NFC conference. In the AFC, the San Diego Chargers (2-0) head to Maryland to face the surprising Baltimore Ravens (3-0) as both try to keep pace atop the conference standings. Betting Lines makers at MySportsbook.com, online sportsbook and casino, have set the Bears as 3.5 point favorites while the Chargers are a 2.5 point bet.
Of the three remaining undefeated teams, only one, New Orleans, enters this week's game as an underdog. Despite an emotional and resounding win over Atlanta on Monday night, the Saints are a 7.5 point underdog against the struggling Carolina Panthers. Indianapolis looks to stay perfect when they face the New York Jets as a 9 point road favorite while the Cincinnati Bengals are a 6 point favorite at home to the New England Patriots.
Six teams enter the week still looking for their first win, with a seventh, Tampa Bay, on a bye week. The prospect of dropping another game would not bode well for a potential playoff run. Since 1990, just three teams -- the 1992 Chargers, 1995 Detroit Lions and 1998 Buffalo Bills -- have overcome losing their first three games of the season to earn a postseason berth. And only the Chargers managed to accomplish the feat after starting 0-4.
