Chargers Need to Regroup

Football Betting Lines

09/25/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - If ever there was a team needing to pause and take a deep breath, it would be the San Diego Chargers. After losing on the road for the second consecutive week - this time 31-24 to the Green Bay Packers - San Diego finds itself already with as many regular season losses as the team had all last year. And the frustration is mounting.

"It's still a long season," said reigning MVP LaDainian Tomlinson. "But I mean, right now we just -- I don't know. I'm lost."

Tomlinson's struggles are the most perplexing storyline in San Diego's disappointing novel. After rushing for a league-leading 1,815 and 28 touchdowns, with a 5.2 yards per carry average last season, the seventh-year pro has just 130 yards and one touchdown this season. He is averaging a paltry 2.3 yards per attempt. L.T.'s three-week plight is mainly due to running behind a slumping offensive line. Regardless, the feeble rushing attack is just one of many issues in need of attention. What's clear is that these are issues that this team did not have in the first three games a year ago.

"To be honest with you, I'm sick and tired of talking about last year because this is not last year," Tomlinson said Monday. "People get caught up in what we did last year. This is not last year's team. This is this year's team. I'm sick and tired of talking about last year. Because it's a whole different team. We need to focus on this year's team and stop looking backward."

Tomlinson is right, though if the Bolts are to start looking forward, they would be wise to do so with a more positive attitude. As bad as the last two weeks have been, it's still only two weeks. San Diego is just a game back of Denver in the AFC West, and still gets to face the Broncos twice. A Chargers home win over Kansas City this week (which is likely) and a Broncos road loss to Indianapolis (which is also likely) would leave San Diego in first place of their division, with two of their next three contests at home.

"You never want to face your home crowd when you lose," says right tackle Shane Olivea, who is expected to return in Week 4 after missing the last game and a half with a back strain. "But the thing is, we have set such a standard at home, and the expectations are so high, that I think sometimes, 'How are we going to live up to them?'"

Olivea's semi-rhetorical question has a very simple and obvious answer: win.

RIVERS ELEVATES HIS GAME

Sunday's game at Green Bay produced a bit of a catch-22 for head coach Norv Turner. On the one hand, he saw his young quarterback bounce back from a terrible Week 2 outing and turn in a very solid performance. Rivers completed 27-36 passes for 306 yards and three touchdowns. (He did have what was essentially a game-ending interception late in the fourth quarter.)

On the other hand, Rivers' success means much of the blame for the club's 1-2 start is lifted off the quarterback's shoulders and onto the head coach's. Talking heads nationwide are already starting to drag Turner over the coals - something that the moderately unsuccessful veteran coach has experienced before.

WHO'S HOT

Despite hurting his right hand early in the game, tight end Antonio Gates had a tantalizing afternoon against the Packers, catching 11 passes for 113 yards. He became the focal point on offense and was a big reason why San Diego was able to move the ball on third downs.

WHO'S NOT

For the second week in a row, defensive lineman Luis Castillo was nowhere to be found on Sunday. In fairness to the third-year pro, he has been battling a sprained foot. Not battling injury, though, is linebacker Shawne Merriman. His two-tackle, zero-sack performance against Green Bay was as uneventful as it sounds.
