seconds left, as Notre Dame improved its NCAA Tournament resume and advanced
to the Big East Tournament semifinals with a 50-45 victory over 16th-ranked
Pittsburgh.
Tyrone Nash added eight points, six assists and six rebounds for Notre Dame
(23-10), which shot 52.9 percent from the floor and won despite scoring just
18 second-half points and going roughly eight minutes without a field goal
in the final 20 minutes.
Notre Dame will face the winner of Cincinnati/West Virginia in Friday's
semifinal action.
Brad Wanamaker scored a team-best 16 points and Jermaine Dixon donated 10
points for Pittsburgh (24-8), which received just four points from Ashton
Gibbs, who came into the contest averaging over 16 points per game.
Notre Dame inched in front late in the first half on a Harangody layup and
Jackson trey before two Wanamaker free throws cut Pittsburgh's deficit to
32-29 at the half.
Tim Abromaitis' layup gave the Fighting Irish a 38-33 lead just over five
minutes into the second half, but they did not connect on another field goal
until Nash's slam handed the underdog a 43-39 edge with a little over 5 1/2
minutes to play.
Jackson's three-pointer with about 3 1/2 to go increased the lead to six
points at 46-40, but three Panthers free throws later, it was again a one-
possession tilt. After a Harangody free throw, Wanamaker penetrated into the
lane and converted an off-balance layup for a 47-45 game with just over 1 1/2
minutes remaining.
Wanamaker and Dixon both had chances at the tie in the final minute --
Wanamaker's a decent look from in close and Dixon's a difficult, acrobatic
shot in the lane after a steal. Harangody corralled the rebound and was fouled
with 15.9 ticks left then calmly stepped to the charity stripe and made both
shots.
Pittsburgh missed several more shots in the final seconds, typifying a
38.6 percent shooting night in defeat.
Game Notes
Pitt entered play with a conference-leading 19 wins in the Big East
Tournament, making seven of the last nine title games...The Fighting Irish
have won six straight overall and took a 28-27 lead in the all-time series
between the two teams...Notre Dame also downed the Panthers, 68-53, back on
February 24th.
