Kensei captures Jim Dandy Stakes

Saratoga Springs, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Kensei, ridden by Edgar Prado, pressed
the pace and then drew off down the stretch to win Saturday's $500,000 Jim
Dandy Stakes at Saratoga. The 1 1/8-mile Jim Dandy is the traditional local
prep race for the $1 million Travers Stakes set for Saturday, August 29.
Coming off a win in last month's Dwyer Stakes, Kensei was 5-2 in the field of
six three-year-olds. Charitable Man, fourth in the Belmont Stakes, was the 6-5
favorite and highly regarded Warrior's Reward was also 5-2.
Setting the pace in the Jim Dandy was Warrior's Reward closely followed by
Kensei with Saratoga Sinner in third. The favorite was racing on the outside
in the closely bunched field.
Kensei took the lead on the final turn with Warrior's Reward and jockey Calvin
Borel in second and Charitable Man moving into third. The leader opened his
margin down the stretch and went on to post a 2 1/4-length victory over
Warrior's Reward.
Charitable Man finished third followed by Flat Bold, Convocation and Saratoga
Sinner. Miner's Escape was scratched from the race.
The time for the 46th Jim Dandy was 1:47.90 on a fast track.
Owned by Stonestreet Stables, Kensei picks up $300,000 with Saturday's win.
The stablemate of leading filly Rachel Alexandra has now won four of seven
career starts for $528,628.
"We thought he was a top-class horse when he broke his maiden," said trainer
Steve Asmussen of Kensei.
Kensei was second in the Derby Trial in April and third in the Woody Stephens
Stakes at Belmont Park in June.
Kensei paid $7.50, $3.60 and $2.40. Warrior's Reward returned $4.10 and $2.60,
and Charitable Man paid $2.30 to show.
