Mariners return home to host Orioles
Baseball Betting Lines
07/06/2009 -
(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - After acquitting themselves well on a very challenging road
trip, the Seattle Mariners return to Safeco Field tonight to play the first of
three straight meetings with the Baltimore Orioles.
Seattle is coming off a nine-game trek in which the club took on the teams
with the three best records in baseball, the Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. The Mariners went 5-4 on the jaunt and posted an
impressive series win over the AL East-leading Red Sox to close out the trip.
The Mariners did fail in their attempt to sweep, however, as Boston put up
five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally for an 8-4 triumph on
Sunday.
Miguel Batista (5-3) came on to protect a 4-3 Mariners' lead in the seventh
but was tagged for three runs over just two-thirds of an inning to take the
loss. Brandon Morrow worked the first six frames for Seattle and gave up three
runs while striking out seven batters.
"I thought we put ourselves in a position to win," Mariners manager Don
Wakamatsu said. "I thought we played this game similarly to how we have the
last four or five games, going into the seventh with a one-run lead, I thought
Morrow did a nice job today, especially in this environment."
Ronny Cedeno had a three-run triple for Seattle, which currently sits 3 1/2
games behind American League West co-leaders Texas and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Jarrod Washburn gets the call for the Mariners in the opener of this homestand
and will be hoping to reverse his recent fortunes. The veteran lefty has lost
six of seven decisions after beginning his 2009 campaign by winning his first
three starts.
Washburn put an end to a frustrating 10-start winless streak by firing six
innings of two-run ball to defeat San Diego on June 25, but served up a
season-high three homers in a 4-2 loss to the Yankees last Wednesday. He
allowed all four New York runs and struck out six batters in a seven-inning
stint.
The 34-year-old pitched well in a home outing against Baltimore on June 1,
limiting the Orioles to just one run and six hits over seven innings. However,
Washburn didn't get any offensive support from his teammates and was stuck
with a 1-0 loss.
Washburn, who is 3-2 with a solid 3.00 earned run average in eight home starts
this season, owns a 6-6 career record with a 4.58 ERA over 16 appearances (15
starts) versus Baltimore.
He'll be opposed tonight by Brad Bergesen, who's in the midst of an impressive
rookie season. The young Baltimore hurler has compiled a 5-2 record with a
3.53 ERA in 14 starts since joining the team's rotation in late April and
enters tonight's clash having won four consecutive decisions.
Bergesen was on his way to another win this past Wednesday after holding
Boston to a mere one run and four hits over eight outstanding innings.
However, the Orioles bullpen surrendered five runs in the bottom of the ninth
to relinquish the lead.
The 23-year-old is unbeaten over his last seven starts and has given up two
runs or less in all but one of those games. That includes a pair of starts
against the Mariners, including a June 3 encounter at Safeco Field in which
Bergesen yielded two runs in a seven-inning no-decision.
Bergesen also faced Seattle in Baltimore on June 9 and fired eight shutout
innings to lead his team to a 3-1 victory.
Baltimore comes in on a two-game losing streak and has dropped four of its
last five tilts following Sunday's 9-6 road defeat to the Angels.
Brian Roberts had a solo homer and a two-run double for the Orioles, while
Matt Wieters finished 3-for-3 and also went deep on the afternoon.
Baltimore starter Rich Hill threw the first 5 1/3 innings and was tagged for
six runs on six hits. Matt Albers (1-3) was handed the loss after allowing the
first three Anaheim hitters to reach base in the bottom of the seventh inning,
all of whom scored.
Adam Jones, selected as the Orioles' lone representative to the AL All-Star
team on Sunday, finished 2-for-5 in Sunday's setback.
The Mariners will have two players -- right fielder Ichiro Suzuki and starting
pitcher Felix Hernandez -- on the AL squad for next week's Midsummer Classic.
Suzuki, voted in as a starter by the fans, currently ranks second in the
league with a .362 batting average.
Seattle has won four of six meetings with the Orioles so far in 2009 and took
two of three from Baltimore in Safeco Field last month.

Super Bowl 2009 Betting propositions
Underdog bettors love the Super Bowl and, history suggests, the underdogs love them back. And the big dogs bite harder.
Even so, there is a warning in store for Super Bowl gamblers who must love dogs: The Arizona Cardinals Super Bowl betting lines might not be enough of a Cinderella to make it worth your while.
Although the Cardinals were widely panned as one of the worst division winners and least playoff-worthy teams in recent memory, their trip to Super Bowl XLIII Jan. 31 in Tampa against the Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl betting lines comes with a little more respect from the oddsmakers than you might imagine. They are a 7-point underdog at most sports books.
If you count yourself among those who covet the big dog in the big game, this isn’t exactly great news. You should have been hoping for more points. This is because the facts show that the bigger the dog, the better the bet in the Super Bowl.
Case in point: Over the past 13 seasons, double-figure underdogs in the Super Bowl are 4-0-1 ATS and have won the past three outright. In fact, the last double-digit chalk to do the deed for bettors was the 1995 San Francisco 49ers, who managed to beat the astounding 19-point spot afforded backers of the San Diego Chargers in the 49-26 romp in Super Bowl XXIX.
By contrast, 7-point favorites are 2-1-1 ATS in the same span, the last such contest resulting a cover grinded out by the Colts in their 29-17 win over the Bears two seasons ago in Super Bowl XLI.
In 2004, the Patriots failed to cover the number in their 32-29 triumph over the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl props while the Rams and Titans gave everyone a refund in 2000 after the Rams posted a 23-16 win as a seven-point favorite.
So while Arizona’s run has included impressive upsets as a 10-point road underdog to the Carolina Panthers and Sunday’s 32-25 win in the NFC championship game to the 4-point favored Philadelphia Eagles, their long-shot story lacks a bit of the David vs. Goliath storyline of past Super Bowl underdogs.
While the seven-point spread represents a significant gap in the perception of strength between the two teams, it is far from monumental. For example, last season the Giants were the wild-card afterthought turned road-warrior buzzsaw, with stunning wins over the Buccaneers, Cowboys and Packers to earn their place in the Super Bowl.
There, they played spoiler to New England’s bid to become the first 19-0 team in NFL history and cemented their place in sports betting lore with a 17-14 win as a 12.5-point underdog.
In other words, the Cardinals appear to have their work cut out for them as a mid-range underdog. But in homage to the spread beaters who have come before them, here is a brief look back at recent colossal upsets in the Super Bowl:
SB XLII -- 2008 -- New York Giants 17, New England Patriots 14 (Giants +12.5) – Eli Manning’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress in the final minute clinched the historic upset for the Giants, who used a masterful defensive plan to slow down Tom Brady and the previously undefeated New England Patriots.
XXXVI -- 2002 -- Patriots 20, Rams 17 (Patriots +14) – This was the coming out party for the aforementioned Brady, who went from obscure sixth-round draft pick to Super Bowl hero in one fell swoop. He led the game-winning drive in the final minute – eschewing analyst John Madden’s advice to take a knee and play for overtime – leading to Adam Vinatieri’s memorable 48-yard field goal that split the uprights as time expired.
XXXII 1998 Broncos 31, Packers 24 (Denver +12) – The first of John Elway’s two consecutive Super Bowl titles to put an end to his Hall of Fame career was an upset for the ages. The Broncos used the determination of Elway and a 157-yard, three-touchdown performance from Terrell Davis to turn back Brett Favre and the heavily favored Packers.

NFL ODDSTop Football Betting Free Agents to Change Teams
NFL Betting
It’s time to see how the biggest NFL free agent signings will perform for their news teams. Some will work out and could be the difference that makes a difference in the win column.
We look at the best off-season signings and if they should influence your NFL betting this season. Julius Peppers – Peppers was the biggest prize available on the 2010 NFL free agent market and the Chicago Bears opened the bank to bring his talents to the south side.
Peppers is explosive, he can get around blockers and cause quarterbacks to lose their minds. We all remember the classic Peppers game last year against the Vikings where he hounded Brett Favre into his worst game of the season. Peppers joining the Bears could be the reason Favre retired for good Tuesday morning. In addition to Peppers, the Bears added Chester Taylor to back up Matt Forte, Forte didn’t have the same intensity in 2009 compared to 2008 and bringing in Taylor will challenge Forte to bring it every game or he’ll risk losing carries to Taylor.
Betting on the Bears is a good option this season because of Julius Peppers and to a lesser extent Taylor. Antonio Bryant and Terrell Owens – The Cincinnati Bengals signed two former number one wide receivers to line up with Chad Ocho Cinco. Antonio Bryant had a huge season in 2008 catching 83 passes for over 1200 yards but regressed last season. Playing for the Tampa Bay Bucs last season was a large part of the regression, everyone was bad in TB last season.
Bryant should have a bounce back season if he can win the number two spot from Terrell Owens. If Bryant wins the number 2 WR spot, it will open up a completely new set of problems for the Bengals. If Owens is forced to the bench in favor of Bryant, his attitude will create trouble for Carson Palmer and head coach Marv Lewis. If Owens is the number two receiver, it means Bryant can’t live up to his past numbers and the Bengals are still limited in the passing game. NFL bettors should be wary of laying their money down on what could potentially be the biggest gong show in the league in 2010. 2010 football betting lines for this can be found at this top online sportsbook. Karlos Danby – The Miami Dolphins have a great running back tandem in Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown, a good young QB in Chad Henne and now the Bill Parcells regime is building a solid defense.
NFL bettors should be wary of laying their money down on what could potentially be the biggest gong show in the league in 2010. Karlos Danby – The Miami Dolphins have a great running back tandem in Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown, a good young QB in Chad Henne and now the Bill Parcells regime is building a solid defense. They signed away the Arizona Cardinals top linebacker Karlos Danby. In the past two seasons, Danby has totaled 228 tackles, 5 sacks, 3 interceptions and 3 forced fumbles. The Dolphins are the forgotten team of the AFC East with the second longest odds to win the division but with the addition of Karlos Danby and a trade for WR Brandon Marshall makes the Miami Dolphins legitimate contenders in the AFC East and in the NFL’s Eastern Conference.
The Dolphins will make NFL wagering fans a lot of money this season, get in early and enjoy the cash. NFL Wagering
