Philadelphia, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - With three games left in his first season
as a major league manager, Manny Acta had the 2009 option picked up by the
Washington Nationals on Friday.
Acta has led the Nationals to a 72-87 record this season. A major
accomplishment for a club that was expected to be the worst in the league and
surpass the 100-loss mark.
"Manny's ability to lead, as well as his infectious optimism and attention to
detail is impressive," said Nationals vice president and general manager Jim
Bowden. "I feel the Nationals' future is in good hands with one of the best
young managers in baseball."
Acta, 38, is currently the youngest manager in the majors. Prior to joining
the Nats, he spent two seasons as a coach with the New York Mets. He also
managed the Dominican Republic team in the inaugural World Baseball Classic.
He is only the second manager in the history of the Nationals, replacing
Frank Robinson prior to the start of the season.
The Nationals will be moving into a new stadium starting next season.
