Seahawks' Burleson earns redemption
Football Betting Lines
09/25/2007 -
(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Apparently, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck
carries around a dictionary with him at all times. How else would he have
known that confidence can be defined as having trust or belief in the
reliability of a person or thing?
Despite two drops by wide receiver Nate Burleson that would have both directly
and indirectly led to Seattle scores, Hasselbeck had no problem going to the
wideout again late in the game for what turned out to be the winning touchdown
in Sunday's 24-21 victory over Cincinnati.
First, let's set the stage for Burleson's heroics.
The fifth-year receiver's tough day began late in the first half. With Seattle
holding a slim lead and deep in its own territory, Hasselbeck took a shot down
the field on 3rd-and-2.
According to Hasselbeck, Burleson was not the intended receiver on the play.
Mack Strong was, but the fullback was forced to stay home and block.
Hasselbeck instead tried to hit Burleson up the seam, but the Nevada product
failed to haul in the pass with under 30 seconds left until halftime.
It only got worse for Burleson, who later dropped a pass in the back of the
end zone that could have put Seattle up by six points. Instead, the Seahawks
had to settle for a 23-yard field goal by Josh Brown and a 17-15 edge with
just over six minutes remaining in the game.
"It was a brand new play, we had never run it before," Hasselbeck said of
Burleson's drop in the end zone. "Nate is working that end line, and he had
(the ball), and I don't know if his concentration was off just because of the
end line, or that he hit the ground pretty hard -- it might have been that."
The Bengals responded with a touchdown in their next drive and led 21-17 after
a failed two-point conversion try. Then Burleson redeemed himself.
After Shaun Alexander extended Seattle's resulting drive with a 14-yard run on
4th-and-1 that put the ball on the Bengal 22, Hasselbeck hit Burleson up the
left sideline off play action. Burleson hauled in the pass around the four-
yard line between the corner and the safety, and glided into the end zone for
the winning score.
"Nate is one of the players we have on our team who is tremendously talented,
that will develop more consistency the more he plays," said Seahawks head
coach Mike Holmgren. "He made great plays today, and he made a couple of
things that I wish we could take back and so does he. But, he is a talented
young man. Matt obviously has confidence in him, because he went to him on the
last throw, when he could have gone...we had the same thing going on both
sides, so he could have chosen (receiver) Deion (Branch)."
According to Burleson, he wasn't thinking about his early drops, just winning
the game.
"I'm just thinking, get in this end zone. We need this," Burleson said. "I
dropped a couple balls. Somebody used the word redemption earlier, but it
wasn't about redemption. It was about getting the Seahawks up in the game and
trying to get this victory. That's all we're thinking. Get in the end zone. We
have a chance to win this game. It definitely feels good, but that wasn't what
I was thinking."
Redemption or not, the game-winning score was a big boost for Burleson, who is
taking over for D.J. Hackett as Seattle's No. 2 two receiver. Hackett is
sidelined with an ankle injury.
ALEXANDER STARTING SLOW, FINISHING STRONG
For the third straight week, Alexander was held in check in the first half,
only to finish strong in the second. Seattle now has to wonder how much his
injured wrist is playing into that.
In the Seahawks' season-opener against Tampa Bay, Alexander had 39 yards and a
score in the first half and ended with 105. A week later against Arizona, the
2005 league MVP had just 10 yards through the first two quarters, but
rebounded to finish with 70 yards and more importantly, a touchdown.
Same story against the Bengals. Alexander, wearing a cast on his left wrist,
had 22 yards at the midway point. However, he totaled 78 yards in the second
half, including his big fourth-down run. He also had a 20-yard run on the
final drive of the game that allowed Seattle to run out the clock.
"I wouldn't have guessed that he had 100 yards, but I'm happy that he did,"
Holmgren said of Alexander. "We did not run the ball...as well as I would have
liked to. But, we're going to build on that. Our running game and our rushing
attack is going to be very important to us before our season is over, and it
will continue to get better."
That will depend on Alexander and his wrist. The star back had to come out of
Sunday's game for a few breathers, and admitted he is banged up.
"Football is a physical sport. My mom told me that when we started, but I just
didn't listen to her," said Alexander. "These last three weeks have probably
been the most physical for me in a long time."
Holmgren then revealed on Monday just how hurt Alexander is. Seattle's coach
said on Monday that pictures of Alexander's wrist showed a small crack.
However, the back will continue to play despite the discovery.
DIFFERENT BOUNCE
Two weekends ago, a fumble by Seattle caused by miscommunication between
Hasselbeck and Alexander led to defeat at the hands of the Arizona Cardinals.
Guess karma owed the Seahawks.
Right after Burleson's score, the Bengals received the ensuing kickoff only
to see Seattle's Lance Laury knock the ball out of the hands of returner Glenn
Holt. The Seahawks' Deon Grant recovered and the offense was able to get a
first down, enabling Seattle to run out the clock and escape with the win.
SAFETY NETS
Both Grant and Brian Russell were brought in this offseason as free agents to
upgrade Seattle's safety positions. Both game up big against the Bengals.
Grant tied for the team lead with nine tackles on Sunday, and in addition to
his fumble recovery on special teams, also came up with an interception.
Russell, meanwhile, added four tackles and an interception.
It was the first interception of the season for both Grant and Russell.
"I thought they (the safeties) had a pretty good game," said Holmgren. "They
were involved in turnover situations, they hit pretty well, they broke up a
couple of passes. That is the safety play that you need in this league. Solid,
lining up people properly."
One player that Grant replaced at strong safety is Jordan Babineaux, who
signed a five-year contract extension last Tuesday.
Babineaux began last season as the cornerback in dime packages for Seattle
before he surpassed Michael Boulware in the seventh game as the starting
strong safety. Injuries at cornerback eventually forced him to return to the
position and serve as a nickel back for the team's two playoff games.
The undrafted free agent is again backing up the corners this season and
totaled six tackles against the Bengals.
INJURY UPDATE
Linebacker Kevin Bentley (back) and running back Maurice Morris (hip) both
missed Sunday's game against the Bengals.
However, linebacker Leroy Hill returned after missing the Arizona game with a
sprained foot. Hill's impact was felt, as he posted nine tackles and a forced
fumble.
UP NEXT: HEADING SOUTH
The Seahawks play their second division game of the season this weekend, when
they travel to San Francisco to battle the 49ers. Both teams are 2-1 on the
young season, meaning the winner of Sunday's game will take over sole
possession of the NFC West.
Despite winning the NFC West last year, Seattle will be looking to avenge two
losses to the 49ers last season.
The first loss came on November 19th of last year in San Francisco, as
Alexander returned to action after missing six games with a foot injury.
However, he rushed for just 37 yards in the 20-14 loss. Hasselbeck missed that
game because of a sprained knee.
49ers running back Frank Gore ran for 212 yards in that November victory.
The clubs then met in Seattle on December 14, a 24-14 Niners' victory.
Hasselbeck threw for 220 yards and a touchdown in that game.
Seattle had won six straight over the 49ers heading into the 2006 season, but
now has split 16 all-time meetings with San Francisco.

American Idol Betting Odds: Season 6
The online gambling websites are in the process of deciphering each American Idol contestant and his or her chances of winning Season 6 to come up with the early American Idol betting lines.
Tim Dalton of MySportsbook.com has been locked away in a soundproof room coming up with all the latest tallies, we are told. "American Idol has become one of the most significant betting events of the year," claims Jack Black of MySportsbook.com. "Last year, millions were bet during the season across the globe, not just in America.
It's tough early on since we really do not have a glimpse as to how well each of these individuals will perform solo on a week-to-week basis. It's like Week 1 of the NFL. Pre-season means nada!
We do know the 24 finalists however.
Sanjaya Malakar is the young man whose sister failed to make it into the Top 24. He's very low key but - unless he totally flubs - will probably win over the young girlie vote for a few weeks anyway. He's too young to go all the way, according to Payton O'Brien.
Brandon Rogers - Who?
Phil Stacy is the military guy who missed his daughter's birth because of the Memphis audition. He should go a good distance.
Chris Sligh - He's got the humor and in many ways he's the Anti-American Idol much like last year's winner Taylor Hicks was. And this is why he'll probably get pretty far in this competition. He's chubby, white with a big curly afro....but more importantly, a great voice! People love "real", not "real cute" to go all the way.
"Blake Lewis should go far because of his uniqueness and looks. He's the boy next store with a twist - he beat boxes. But on top of this, he's a great singer, and I adore him," Payton O'Brien relayed.
A talented beat-boxer Blake Lewis was a hit during the group sing in Hollywood but Simon explained that this is a singing contest just before he told him he was “in.”
Paul Kim has caught our own roving reporter, Jenny Woo's eyes.
"I love the fact that there is a Korean American on the show and he is bound to get more Asians tuning into the show," Woo said from her Miami Beach estate. "There has never been a major presence of Asian-Americans on American Idol in the past. He's a hottie with a nice voice so that should help to take him far. Expect heavy betting action from the Asian community."
Sundance Head - He's not perfect, but he's got the personality that will take him through a few weeks, plus he's got the lineage (son of Roy Head - whose 1965 single, "Treat Her Right," hit No. 5 in the charts)
And the others:

AJ Tabaldo - the 5th time is the charm

The girls
"Melinda Doolittle has one of the best voices," says MySportsbook.com Reporter and an acclaimed dancer in her own right, Destiney Lewis. "It is great to see a back up singer step out like she has. The girl needs to gain more confidence but that can also be a positive. I think she will go far."
Alena Alexander - Those tears (she never seems to stop bawling) should get her far.
"Single mom Lakisha Jones I suspect will be a pretty big favorite entering Week 1 of the competition," says Destiny Williams. Jones is an excellent singer and down to earth. "She'll have a wide appeal," echoed O'Brien.
Nicole Trellis - Seems to exert confidence.
Amy Krebs - a powerful singer.
