Verlander's gem helps Tigers split with Orioles
Baseball Betting Lines
07/20/2008 -
Baltimore, MD (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Justin Verlander's three-hit, 8 2/3-inning
gem led the Tigers to a 5-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles to earn a split
in the four-game series at Camden Yards.
Verlander (8-9) walked three batters while striking out three and retiring 16
in a row between the second and seventh innings for Detroit, which had dropped
its previous two.
"That's a big time pitcher coming up big time for us when we needed it the
most. We were short going into the game and he knew it," Tigers manager Jim
Leyland said. "He kept his composure; he didn't try to overthrow. That's a big
time performance when we needed it the most. Tremendous."
Four Tigers had multi-hit games including Magglio Ordonez and Marcus Thames,
who both hit solo home runs. Ryan Rayburn had a pair of RBI singles while
Ramon Santiago was 2-for-4.
Brian Burres (7-6) allowed three runs on six hits and four walks in 5 1/3
innings while striking out five for Baltimore, which has dropped four of its
last six.
"They're a very good hitting club. They're patient with two strikes. They foul
off a lot of pitches. They're real professional," Orioles manager Dave
Trembley said. "A lot of experience in the lineup. And Verlander pitched a
heck of a game. That's kind of the whole game right there."
Sunday has not been a good day for the Orioles this season as the team has
lost 15 straight games on the final day of the week.
Luke Scott had an RBI double while Aubrey Huff walked twice and scored the
home team's lone run.
Ordonez's two-out home run, his 13th, tied the game at one in the top of the
third. In the sixth, Thames' 19th blast with one out hugged the foul pole in
left to put Detroit on top. Unsure whether the ball was fair, the umpires
gathered as Thames paused his home run trot between second and third base
before the hit was ruled a homer.
Rayburn's bloop single two batters later scored Brandon Inge, who followed
Thames with a double, and chased Burres from the game in favor of Lance
Cormier.
Detroit took a 5-1 lead in he eighth to put the game away. Miguel Cabrera and
Thames led off with a single and double, respectively, as Cormier was pulled
for Randor Bierd. The O's third pitcher got Inge on a chopper to short, but
Cabrera came home on the play. Raburn followed with a two-out single to score
Thames.
Verlander walked Brian Roberts to start the ninth before getting Nick Markakis
to ground into a double play. Melvin Mora then drew a walk prompting
Leyland to pull Verlander, who walked off the mound shaking his head, from the
game. It would have been his fourth career complete game and second this
season.
Todd Jones walked Huff before Inge made a diving stop up the third base line
and threw Kevin Millar out at first to end the game.
Scott's one-out RBI double in the second scored Huff, who led off with a walk,
for a 1-0 lead. They were the only Orioles baserunners in the first 6 2/3
innings before Millar's double in the seventh.
Game Notes
Detroit has won seven of its last nine games against Baltimore...Mora's streak
of three consecutive games with a home run ended...Baltimore is one Sunday
loss shy of the modern major league record set by the Philadelphia Phillies...Center fielder Adam Jones was held out of the Orioles starting
lineup in favor if Jay Payton.

March Madness odds and printable March Madness brackets
With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship. Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92. After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points. Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1. Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years. With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed. UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern. Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier. OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak. Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four. It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta. But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.

Pacific-10 Conference odds
Teams that should be in: Stanford
Oregon and USC get their tickets punched after taking care of business this weekend. Yes, the Trojans' computer numbers aren't great, but there's no way the third-place team in this league is getting nixed. Grudgingly, I added Arizona after consultation with our Bracketologist. I don't know that Arizona will lose its last three (including a Pac-10 quarterfinal game), and even if the Cats do, I still can't see how they'd be left out, given the overall profile. That said, it bears watching, as three more L's would leave them at 18-12 (9-9) and on a 6-11 skid entering the Dance. It would be nice to see the Wildcats get at least one W in the Bay Area next week, as Cincinnati (albeit without Armein Kirkland and with a worse profile) was axed after a similar slide last season. I just couldn't rationalize having some of the other teams as locks and not having Arizona in that category -- there just aren't enough good teams behind the Cats to threaten their spot, it seems. Stanford has its fate in its own hands with the Arizona schools coming to the Farm to close out the regular season next weekend.
Should be in:
Stanford [17-10 (9-7), RPI: 40, SOS: 21] No shame in not getting a win in L.A., but that makes the home game against Arizona State a must-win ahead of what could be an intriguing meeting with Arizona should the Cats lose at Cal. Getting to 11 Pac-10 wins would make Selection Sunday much more comfortable, but 10's probably more than enough this season. The Cardinal have nonconference wins over Texas Tech and at Virginia to lean on, although they also lost badly to Air Force and Santa Clara at home.
| Southeastern Conference odds |
Work left to do: Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Mississippi State
It looks more and more possible that no one from the SEC West will make the NCAAs. How weird is that? Tennessee and Vandy move into the locks category after more good work this weekend. Kentucky stays there, although it would be smart for the Cats to handle Georgia at home Wednesday ahead of a trip to the Swamp. Could a disaster scenario (two more L's and a first-round SEC tourney exit) somehow dislodge the Cats despite their incredible computer numbers? Still unlikely, but not worth chancing it.
Work left to do:
Alabama [19-9 (6-8), RPI: 43, SOS: 47] The tough L at Tennessee was understandable, and even created some hope. Unfortunately, that hope was dashed by a home loss to Auburn, which leaves the Tide in some real trouble. There's still no signature win on the profile (no, Kentucky doesn't count), and the computer profile is weakening rapidly. The Tide conceivably could beat Ole Miss and win at Miss. State to get to 8-8 and clinch at least a share of the West crown, but that's probably not enough right now. The Tide will need to do some work in the SEC tourney.
Georgia [16-10 (8-6), RPI: 52, SOS: 23] This is the team with the best chance to make it from this section right now. The Bulldogs rebounded from a terrible performance at Ole Miss to beat down Miss. State. Now they are at Kentucky (king of the RPI 51-100 win) and home to Tennessee. That would be worth a lot of computer points to get both (which is doable), as both teams are in the top 11 in RPI. Finishing at least 9-7 is an absolute must, and I would feel much better about the Dawgs' chances if they got both to get to 10 SEC wins. They also beat Gonzaga, but lost to ACC bubblers Georgia Tech and Clemson.
Mississippi [18-10 (7-7), RPI: 63, SOS: 79] Like everyone else in this division, Ole Miss gacked up a chance to stake a claim, losing by double figures at South Carolina. Even 9-7 likely is not nearly enough with a nonconference profile devoid of anything notable.
Mississippi State [16-11 (7-7), RPI: 66, SOS: 37] With a chance to get in the mix, these Bulldogs were leashed by their Georgia counterparts. Could they get to 9-7? I guess -- although winning at Arkansas, then beating Alabama is no lock -- but would that mean all that much for a team with this overall profile? Probably not. There's nothing of note (on the good side) in the nonconference profile. |
