Zimmerman's expected return highlights Nats-Giants tilt

Baseball Betting Lines

07/22/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Washington Nationals are expected to get a big lift in their lineup tonight, when they open a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park.

The Nationals have been without third baseman Ryan Zimmerman since late May because of a small tear in his left shoulder. Zimmerman, who is hitting .257 with eight homers and 27 RBI, did not undergo surgery and opted for rest. Washington went 16-32 with Zimmerman on the disabled list, but expects its standout slugger back in action tonight.

Washington is last in the NL East standings, but has won two in a row since losing three straight. It won the last two contests of a three-game series at Atlanta's Turner Field to kick off a nine-game trek, including Sunday's 15-6 pounding of the Braves in the series finale.

Willie Harris homered and drove in five runs to lead the deluge, while Felipe Lopez finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Austin Kearns had a big day for the Nats as well, collecting three hits -- including a homer -- two runs batted in and a franchise-tying five runs scored. Jesus Flores chipped in a career-high five hits with two RBI and two runs scored.

Washington starter Odalis Perez earned his first win since May 28, allowing five runs on nine hits through five frames while fanning four batters and walking two.

The Nationals are 2-1 on this trip and 18-31 away from D.C. this season.

Jason Bergmann gets the nod for Washington on Tuesday and hasn't won since hurling seven shutout innings against the New York Mets on May 15. He is 0-5 in 11 trips to the mound since then, while sporting a 1-6 record and a 4.03 ERA through 15 total games (13 starts) this season.

In his previous outing Friday at Atlanta, Bergmann gave up one run in two innings for a no-decision in a 7-6 Washington loss.

The righty is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in two career games (1 start) against the Giants. He faced San Francisco in a 10-1 loss on June 6 of this season, yielding eight runs -- five earned -- and 10 hits in just three innings of work.

The Giants were just swept in three games at home by the Milwaukee Brewers and suffered their ninth setback in 10 tries with Sunday's 7-4 loss.

Starting pitcher Tim Lincecum, who was back after a bout with the flu that caused him to miss the All-Star game, showed no ill effects but was hurt by two homers as he gave up five runs on six hits and four walks over six-plus frames. The righty fanned eight batters in losing for the second time in his last three starts after starting the year 10-1.

Jose Castillo had two hits, two RBI and a run scored for the Giants, who fell to 0-3 on a nine-game homestand and 17-31 by the Bay this season. Aaron Rowand knocked in two runs with a double, while Emmanuel Burriss added two hits and scored a run in a losing cause.

Giants starter Barry Zito will try to bounce back from a subpar outing when he takes the ball on Tuesday. Zito did not factor in the outcome of a 7-3 loss against the New York Mets his last time out on July 10. He allowed three runs -- two earned -- on four hits in five innings of work.

Zito, who is 2-1 in his last four outings, sports a 4-12 mark with a 5.62 earned run average in 19 trips to the rubber in 2008. The left-hander and 2002 AL Cy Young Award winner defeated Washington on June 8 despite permitting three runs and seven hits in five frames of a 6-3 victory.

Zito is 1-1 with a 3.91 ERA in four career starts against the Nats.

San Francisco swept a four-game set against Washington in D.C. from June 6-9 of this season. The Nationals were 9-4 in the last 13 games of this series before losing the last four matchups with the Giants.

Numerous College Basketball teams take final big step to March Madness betting

So, what turned on the lock spigot? Well, after what felt like weeks of teams treading water and slipping back into the bubble muck, a bunch of them finally decided to say "to heck with parity" and won games that should put them into the Big Dance.

Disagree with some of these? Then here's the challenge. Take all of the "should be ins" and make a legit case that each should be ahead of the team that's a lock. Then find 10 more teams that also should be placed in the bracket ahead of that lock team. Not so easy, is it?

If you want more evidence that these locks should be good to go, check out what our research department dug up. Since the NCAA Tournament went to 64 teams in 1985, only six teams from a "big six" conference have had a record of 10-6 or better in conference play and not been selected: Colorado (2004) and Nebraska (1999) from the Big 12, Boston College and Seton Hall (both 2003) from the Big East, Indiana (2005) from the Big Ten and UCLA, which somehow went 12-6 in the Pac-10 in 1988 and still missed out. (Note: Five teams went 11-7 and didn't get in, the latest being last season's Stanford team, which had a brutal nonconference run.)

Yes, 10 conference wins doesn't always mean what it used to because of unbalanced schedules, but this season, it should be plenty good in all but the extreme cases (see: Iowa).

In a way, this is a welcome development, because this is a bubble watch, not a lock watch. We can finally be done with teams like Maryland and Virginia Tech and start really bearing down on at-large battles such as Syracuse-West Virginia and Appalachian State-Georgia Tech.

Interestingly, all the shifting of teams into lock status appears to be more administrative than impactful. The number of remaining available at-larges didn't change one iota. The only difference is that teams on the bubble now have a clearer idea of which team(s) they are competing with for those precious bids.

The Bubble Breakdown

As always, I've tried to be as inclusive as possible while only including teams that would have a reasonable chance of at least being discussed if this were Selection Sunday. If your team's not on here, there's probably a good reason (or three) -- start with the RPI and SOS numbers and work your way down.

(Please remember, per selection committee criteria, that records displayed are Division I only. Next update: Feb. 28)

If you have a legitimate grievance, or just like talking bubble, send an e-mail. Polite ones with fact-based arguments have a much better chance of receiving a response. I apologize in advance if I can't get back to all of you.

Atlantic Coast Conference

Work left to do: Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech

The ACC moves to six locks as BC, Va Tech and Virginia all got their 10th ACC wins, which should be more than enough this season, and Maryland rallied past North Carolina to get the final piece the Terps needed. After that? It could end there unless FSU, Ga Tech or Clemson picks things up in a hurry.

Work left to do:

Clemson [19-9 (5-9), RPI: 41, SOS: 42] The Tigers are closer to locking up the collapse of the year award (in a good battle with OK State) than they are to grabbing an at-large. Clemson's been very competitive, but there's no really positive way you can spin nine losses in 11 games. They now cannot get to .500 in ACC play and still must head to Virginia Tech in the season finale (after hosting Miami). Unless the Tigers win both and/or do some serious work in the ACC tourney, they very well could be left out. There are no great nonconference wins, but ODU, App State, Miss. State, South Carolina and Georgia are all respectable W's.

Florida State [18-11 (6-9), RPI: 48, SOS: 14] The Noles got thrashed at Maryland to run their losing streak to five, but then pounded NC State at home to set the table for what likely is an elimination game at Miami. You can at least make a case for the Seminoles at 7-9 in ACC play (and some work in the ACC tourney), but 6-10 is not going to cut it. Wins at Duke and over Florida will resonate, but the computer numbers remain questionable. Beyond Florida, FSU thrashed bubble buddy Providence, but there's not a ton beyond those two games that will help. They didn't show well in big-time opportunities against Pitt and Wisconsin (before the Florida win).

Georgia Tech [18-10 (6-8), RPI: 51, SOS: 46] The Jackets beat Wake on Wednesday but couldn't get it done at UVa on Saturday, which could be a crucial loss with UNC and BC (both at home) remaining and 8-8 almost a certain need for at-large consideration. A nonconference win over Memphis helps, but the RPI and SOS are not at-large quality right now; if you combine those with a sub-.500 ACC mark, that could spell NIT for GT.

Super Bowl XLIV Odds

Super Bowl XLIII isn't even a week old yet and oddsmakers have already released Super Bowl XLIV odds.

Despite the Pittsburgh Steelers winning Super Bowl 43, the New England Patriots are 8/1 favorites to win Super Bowl 44.

Bet Super Bowl XLIV Future Odds

With their 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII, the Steelers became the latest NFL champion. But believe it or not, oddsmakers from online sports book MySportsbook.com don't have the Steelers the favorites to win Super Bowl XLIV next season.

That honor belongs to the New England Patriots, who are 8/1 favorites to win despite not even qualify for the postseason in 2008. The Pats also have a major decision to make regarding what to do with Matt Cassel, who played well in Tom Brady's (knee surgery) absence last year but is also a free agent this offseason.

Ironically, the Steelers aren't even oddsmakers second choice to win Super Bowl 44, as the Dallas Cowboys are listed right behind the Patriots at 9/1 despite not making the playoffs themselves. Clearly oddsmakers think the public will hop back on the Cowboys' bandwagon considering the immense talent they have and the opening of a brand new stadium.

After Dallas, then comes Pittsburgh at 10/1, but they share those odds with the New York Giants, who won Super Bowl XLII. The Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers round out the top six teams at 12/1, while the Baltimore Ravens (14/1), Tennessee Titans (16/1), Carolina Panthers (18/1) and Philadelphia Eagles (18/1) complete the top 10.

The NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals got no love from oddsmakers as they were established as a 30/1 long shot to win next year's Super Bowl. They share those same odds with the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers – two teams that didn't even qualify for the postseason. Other long shots are the Kansas City Chiefs (100/1), Detroit Lions (100/1), St. Louis Rams (75/1) and Oakland Raiders (75/1).
